Manchester United’s pursuit of a new midfielder is only expected to intensify in the coming month.
Whilst it has been relatively clear what attackers United are following, the midfield market has been significantly murkier.
There were some links to Juventus and former Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz earlier in the summer.
It was asserted that United had been offered the player in a swap deal for Jadon Sancho but this never came to pass.
There have also been links to Ruben Amorim’s former midfield general at Sporting CP, Morten Hjulmand.
Manchester City are reportedly keen to rival United for the services of the 26-year-old.
There is also significant interest from other countries as Juventus have taken a concrete step to sign him.
Juventus are keen on the player and are said to keen to do a deal for around €30-40 million.
It has been claimed that the Italians are willing to offer players in exchange for Hjulmand in an attempt to lower the overall fee.
The Old Lady would be keen to add Douglas Luiz to any deal, as he has no future in Italy after refusing to return to pre-season training.
Nonetheless, according to Portuguese paper A Bola, Sporting want no part of this deal.
It is reported that “Sporting would have no intention of accepting a player exchange as part of any transfer.”
What’s more, they are seemingly aware that United would be willing to offer more cash for the player, so see no value in accepting a reduced fee plus a player that they aren’t very keen on.
With Hjulmand’s asking price reportedly reducing to €50 million, it will be interesting to see what action United can or will take in the final month of the window.
