Manchester United remain heavily linked with a move for Sporting midfielder Morten Hjulmand.

The Red Devils need a long-term replacement for Casemiro, whose contract expires at the end of this season.

The Brazilian has been in superb form this campaign. However, he is already on the wrong side of 30, and the Premier League giants are expected to put succession plans in place for the position in 2026.

United are already considering several names for the role, including Hjulmand, who has gone from strength to strength at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in recent times.

A possible reunion at Old Trafford

Hjulmand was brought to Sporting from Lecce by Ruben Amorim in the summer of 2023, and they went on to win the league that season.

The Danish midfielder has been linked with United ever since the Portuguese took charge at old Trafford, although a move has failed to materialise so far.

However, with the Red Devils in need of a quality signing in the middle of the park in 2026, the 26 year old is reportedly back on Amorim’s agenda.

Given that Hjulmand is well-versed in the rigours of the Portuguese head coach’s 3-4-3 system, he could be an instant hit at the Theatre of Dreams. The Dane has registered 17 appearances across competitions for Sporting this season, all of which were starts.

Hjulmand reportedly has an €80 million release clause in his contract, but a recent report suggests he could be available for a discounted fee next summer.

United can sign Hjulmand for a discount

According to A Bola, Hjulmand’s release clause will be valid from 1 June to 14 June, but Sporting are willing to let him go for €50-60 million next summer because of the player’s good conduct.

Juventus are eyeing the Dane as well, but a move is unlikely in January due to the Bianconeri’s poor finances.

The report adds that United are joined by Manchester City in the race, with both English clubs expected to invest in the middle of the park next year.

While Amorim’s presence at Old Trafford could work to the Red Devils’ advantage, City’s sporting director Hugo Viana could tilt the tide towards the blue half of Manchester. Viana reportedly played a key role in Hjulmand’s arrival at the Estadio Jose Alvalade in 2023.
