Motherwell manager has no plans to leave club despite continued links to Celtic | OneFootball

Jens Berthel Askou has distanced himself from suggestion of a Motherwell exit this summer. The Danish manager has impressed with the Fir Park side in the hunt for European football as they play an impressive brand of football. Ahead of Saturday’s trip to Glasgow’s East End to face Celtic, Askou has confirmed that he has no plans to depart the Steelmen after one season.

Celtic have been linked with a move for the Motherwell boss, as they looked to ensure that the best manager is in place for next season after the disastrous appointment of Wilfried Nancy midseason.

Speaking to Sun Sport, Askou remarked on his intention to remain at Fir Park and continue building on an impressive first season in Scottish football.

“My legacy here is not in my mind, because I’m still here. I’m planning for the future with this club, with Kyrk and all the other guys behind the scenes.

“But what I will say is that the clubs who are most successful are also consistent in their style, not just with necessarily the same staff and the same players.

“It has shown and it’s very evident that consistency, when you’re doing something right, is the key to being successful over time.

“Especially in clubs which don’t have the most resources to repair bad spells by changing the way you recruit and play all the time.

“I know, and every manager or player should know, that you’re only there for a brief spell in that club’s history.

“This is a very old and proud club. So you try to look after it while you’re here and give it your best every single day.

“And then you hope some of that will leave an impression and some good memories to the guys who will be here for generations.

“If that’s the case, then I think you’ve done something right.”

Motherwell have lost just four times in the Premiership this season and were worthy winners as they beat Nancy’s Celtic side before the New Year, a game that really should have spelled the end for the Frenchman. Motherwell played Celtic off the park and they will be confident that they can cause an upset at the weekend after their win as well as the late defeat at Celtic Park earlier this season.

The performances from Askou’s team have captured plaudits and the 43-year-old has emerged as a candidate for a number of jobs as a result. Aberdeen are believed to have been keen on the ex-IFK Gothenburg manager; however, Motherwell have continued to impress and punch above their weight, something that will attract potential suitors.
