Former Roma manager Jose Mourinho reflected on the way the Budapest defeat may have influenced the way referees perceive him on the European stage.
In an interview with Sky Sport, the former Roma coach commented on the difficult relationship he has with European referees after his outburst directed at UEFA in the post-match of the 2023 Europa League final.
“The feeling is that I’m in trouble, I lost a final in a way that I still don’t accept and since then I’ve felt it,” said the Special One.
“This season we were eliminated from the Champions League, in the preliminary round by Lille with a penalty in the 94th minute that only the VAR saw.”
“The red card against Manchester United? I was just shouting, like everyone on the bench and in the stadium, without any kind of insult. And I get a red card. I know it’s a battle that I can never win.”
“Do I deserve better treatment? No, I deserve to be treated like everyone else. Since that final in Budapest it’s becoming difficult.”
