José Mourinho could leave Benfica for a return to Real Madrid, a deal worth around 15 million euros to the club. If confirmed, it would be the third managerial move of his career to involve compensation between clubs.
According to Glorioso 1904, the possible switch comes as Real Madrid enter an election period, with Florentino Pérez set to face Enrique Riquelme. Mourinho is viewed as pivotal to the project and could be a key card for the incumbent.
Since departing Porto for Chelsea in 2004, transactions involving Mourinho have totalled about 137.1 million euros. Of that, 29 million relates to club-to-club compensation and 108.1 million to severance payments following dismissals.
High-profile settlements include 22 million euros paid by Manchester United in 2018, 20.9 million by Chelsea in 2007 and 19.7 million agreed by Real Madrid in 2013. More recently, he received 15 million euros from Fenerbahçe after terminating his deal in 2025, a season marked by elimination against Benfica in the Champions League play-off.
If the Madrid move goes through, Benfica would offset the loss with a significant payment only nine months after hiring him in September 2025. The prospect adds to a hectic year for Mourinho, who went from a central figure in Benfica’s election campaign to a protagonist in another power struggle, this time in Madrid.
