José Mourinho, in his first interview as Real Madrid head coach, discussed his relationship with Vinícius Júnior and the Benfica flashpoint involving Prestianni. He also said his squad is set and distanced himself from credit for the No 7’s decision to continue.
According to Glorioso 1904, Mourinho felt the team’s growth and the sense of a winning project were decisive in the forward staying at the Bernabéu.
The pair’s rapport was strained around last season’s meeting between Real Madrid and Benfica. Mourinho had a disagreement with Vinícius after defending Benfica’s Argentine prospect Prestianni following a racist incident in the Champions League.
Mourinho said Prestianni was his player at the time, so there was no debate, adding that Vini Jr now knows where he stands. He noted he was on the pitch protesting when the Brazilian was recently denied a penalty.
He argued people, particularly referees, must learn how to treat Vinícius, saying decisions given to others are not given to him and that he is not respected.
Even so, Mourinho advised the winger to celebrate goals with his own supporters rather than in front of the opposition end.
