Mourinho hit out at referee João Pinheiro after Benfica’s match against Braga in Leiria, casting doubt on the dismissal of Nicolás Otamendi. He suggested the call served the official’s CV.
The Benfica coach also criticised his team’s display and argued the referee’s demeanour was unlike what he usually shows. According to Glorioso 1904, he broadened his post-match comments to question the handling of key moments.
Before addressing the officiating, he looked ahead to the Taça de Portugal, saying Benfica will face the strongest team in Portugal right now and that the points show it.
On Otamendi’s red card, he said he had serious doubts and that it almost looked as if the defender was meant to be sent off. He added that sending off a world champion could be good for a referee’s CV.
He also wondered whether João Pinheiro behaves the same way with every captain he referees. Mourinho drew a line between an insult and a discussion, calling the situation completely out of place.
