José Mourinho attended Benfica academy matches at Seixal on Saturday morning before his pre-match press conference, underlining his pledge to promote youth.
A Bola reports that this has become a regular habit as he monitors the club’s prospects coming through the system.
He watched the under-17s, who lost 1-0 to Braga, then took in the Iniciados B clássico with Porto, which ended 2-2.
At his press conference he said he had just come from those games at Seixal and noted the pitches were in a very difficult state, making it hard for the youngsters to put passes together, adding it would be the same for senior players.
Since arriving at Benfica, Mourinho has leaned on the academy, handing first-team debuts to José Neto, Daniel Banjaqui and Anísio Cabral, while regularly involving other prospects in training.
With matchday 21 against Alverca approaching, he could again turn to Seixal graduates. Daniel Banjaqui could keep his place, with Amar Dedic being managed, having started against Estrela da Amadora and Tondela.
