David Moyes insists he does not mind his players reacting angrily with each other after Idrissa Gueye was sent off for slapping team-mate Michael Keane in the face.

Despite Gueye’s first-half red card, Everton were able to secure a 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford thanks to Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall’s winner.

Discussing the red card after the game, Moyes believes the referee could have dealt with the situation better.

“If nothing happened I don’t think anybody in the stadium would have been surprised,” he told Sky Sports.

“I thought the referee could have maybe taken a little bit longer to think about it, maybe just gone over and sorted it.

“I’m getting told the rules of the game are that if you slap even your own player or you lift an arm in some way then you could be in trouble.

“But you know, there’s another side to it. I quite like my players fighting each other and getting annoyed at each other over a bad ball or if someone didn’t do the right action.

“I think that’s part of it, if you want a winning team and you want that resilience and toughness that got us the result. I think you need players who will act that way.

“I’m disappointed we got the sending off but we’ve all been footballers and the ones who have been will tell you you quite often get angry with your team-mates.”

Moyes also says Gueye apologised to his team-mates after the match.

“He’s apologised in the dressing room for the sending off,” the Everton boss continued. “He’s praised the players incredibly for their performance tonight and thanked them for it.”
