Mozambique win first ever AFCON game | OneFootball

Mozambique ended their 40-year wait after securing their first-ever victory at the Africa Cup of Nations against Gabon.

Previously, the Mambas had gone 16 games without a single victory at the tournaments but they took the lead against Gabon in the 37th minute when Faisal Bangal headed in from Geny Catamo's delivery.

Mozambique doubled their lead from the penalty spot after 42-year-old winger Dominguês had his shirt pulled back by the relatively inexperienced 37-year-old, Bruno Ecuélé-Manga. After setting up the first, Catamo then coolly slotted the penalty home.

Gabon reduced the deficit just before the break after a long range shot was only parried away by goalkeeper Ernan Siluane with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on hand to convert the rebound.

The two-goal lead was restored early into the second period by Diogo Calila who headed in from Witi Quembo.

Mozambique were made to sweat when substitute Alex Moussounda struck but Chiquinho Conde's team managed to hold on to keep them in with a chance of progressing to the knock-out round. For Gabon though, that/s two defeats out of two.
