Peter Schmeichel couldn’t speak highly enough of Marcus Rashford following his standout display against Everton.

Although the forward was unable to etch his name onto the scoresheet, he oversaw a stellar 70 minutes of action at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Reacting post-match with Viaplay, Schmeichel said: “Coming away from that game, Rashford is now smelling of roses. I thought he was absolutely fantastic. Welcome back, Marcus. We have missed you. Because he is one of the top players in the world.”

Such words will be music to Michael Carrick’s ears as he looks to find some momentum following a shaky start to the term.

The next fortnight sees United kick off their Champions League and Carabao Cup campaigns while also facing arch-rivals Manchester City, who are yet to taste defeat in the league, at Old Trafford this Sunday.

Carrick confirmed after the deflating draw that the Carrington graduate had signalled an injury problem, which prompted his withdrawal when United were still looking to grind out a win.

It remains to be seen if the boss will make changes to his XI for the clash with the reigning Azerbaijan league champions on Thursday, especially with the Manchester derby just three days after the tie.

Joshua Zirkzee is still awaiting his first minutes of the season and, after scoring yesterday, Benjamin Sesko will feel as though he’s earned a start.

Mason Mount also made his return to the matchday squad on Merseyside after sustaining an injury in pre-season, so he could be in line to make his first appearance.
