Munir El Haddadi has fled Tehran by road after air strikes by the United States and Israel hit targets in Iran on Saturday. The former Barcelona forward, now with Esteghlal, had planned to fly out with fellow Spaniard Iván Sánchez.

"I was on the plane, about to take off with Iván Sánchez. But suddenly they told us to get off, that there had been an air attack," he told Marca.

"The club provided me with a car so I could leave the country by road and, thanks to that, I was able to cross the border without problems. I am safe in Türkiye and in the next few hours I will arrive in Spain."

El Haddadi joined Esteghlal in 2025. He won a Spain cap in 2014 before later representing Morocco. He also played for Valencia, Getafe, Sevilla, Las Palmas, Leganés and Alavés.

He is one of three Spanish players in Iran, along with Sánchez and goalkeeper Antonio Adán. Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs yesterday urged the 158 Spaniards still in the country to leave using available routes.

ISNA said 201 people have been killed and 747 injured after the bombings in Tehran and other cities.
