Manchester United’s pursuit of a new left-back has yet to bear fruit, despite the fact that they remain linked with several young players for the position. The Red Devils are interested in succession plans for Luke Shaw, who was indispensable last season but has entered the final year of his contract.

The Englishman started all 38 league games, becoming only the fifth United player to do so since the inception of the Premier League. However, Shaw recently turned 31 and has a history of injury issues, which has prompted talk of reinforcements in the position before the end of the summer.

The English giants have reinforced their midfield this year by signing Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans, while the goalkeeping department has been strengthened by the arrival of Karl Darlow. Recent reports suggest that Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba is close to a move to Old Trafford, so INEOS could turn their attention to the left-back position next.

While Lewis Hall is reportedly the preferred candidate for the position, prising him away from Newcastle United is likely to be very difficult this year. The Red Devils reportedly have Arsenal’s Myles Lewis-Skelly on their wish list as well, with the player’s ability to operate in midfield further endearing him to INEOS.

However, Gunners legend Ian Wright believes that the 19 year old is unlikely to leave the Emirates this summer.

Speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, Wright appeared bewildered at the source of rumours linking Lewis-Skelly with United. He said: “I don’t know where that’s coming from because I know for a fact that’s not coming from his team.”

“It’s not coming from his mum. Arsenal fans need to chill out with his mum saying that she’s touting him about. Myles has already said he’s happy to stay. Why have Arsenal not just said he’s not for sale?’ He’d be a great signing for Manchester United, of course he would. Look what he’s doing.”

“There’s things happening and this again is what I’m worried about with Arsenal, it’s the way we’re doing business with intermediaries now. How’s that story happening when we know for a fact they’re happening and want to stay and are happy.”

Lewis-Skelly registered four assists in 36 appearances across all competitions last season for Arsenal as they won the Premier League.

United have every reason to be interested

Wright went on to acknowledge that United’s interest in Lewis-Skelly is justified, adding: “When you’ve got someone like Myles who is playing well, it’s unbelievable what he’s capable of doing then of course Manchester United will see if something can happen.”

“They’ve seen Guimaraes come in they’ve seen Declan Rice. He doesn’t want to leave and that’s the thing that’s really baffling me is why Arsenal don’t just come in and say he’s not for sale.”

Acclaimed journalist Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that United remain in the market for a new left-back. As such, a move for the young Englishman cannot be entirely ruled out yet.

Final Thoughts

United legend Wayne Rooney recently urged the club to make a move for Lewis-Skelly this summer. The teenager has all the ingredients to become a world-beater, so the Red Devils should grab the opportunity with both hands if a chance presents itself.
