Nadia Nadim, 38, a Denmark international forward born in Afghanistan, carries a harrowing past of an assassinated father, exile and refugee camps. She now pursues a surgical career alongside her life as a player.
As reported by L'Équipe, she fled Afghanistan in 2000.
Her departure came four years after the Taliban returned to power.
Her father was a general in the Afghan army, a tall, intelligent and charismatic figure, with the aura of a James Bond character.
He loved sport and had played international field hockey before mujahideen killed half of the team.
