Napoli Elect Not to Substitute Injured Buongiorno for Now

Alessandro Buongiorno will indeed miss significant time, as he needs surgery, but Napoli haven’t put pedal to the metal to acquire any replacement for the time being, Tuttomercatoweb reports.

More precisely, the Italian international will go under the knife to repair a partially torn meniscus. He’ll be sidelined for three to four months. It’s his eighth injury since he moved to the Partenopei. He spent time on the shelf due to a few thigh issues and sat out six weeks because of a lumbar fracture in late 2024.

New Napoli coach Massimiliano Allegri plots to use 4-3-3 more regularly than a three-man defense, so their depth might be sufficient even without Buongiorno. The Azzurri have welcomed back Rafa Marin, who featured 31 times with Villarreal last season, and Luca Marianucci, who was a regular for Torino from January on, after they went out on loan. Sam Beukema doesn’t want to leave just a year after his arrival, and Amir Rrahmani will be the linchpin of the rearguard as usual. Instead, Juan Jesus has exited at the conclusion of his contract.

If the Partenopei eventually decide to intervene, Federico Gatti will be their number one target. Juventus are open to selling him, but they need a substitute and have to make sure Gleison Bremer stays first. According to Alfredo Pedullà, the Serie A runner-ups have blocked the departure of Nosa Edward Obaretin. He was set to join Genoa after paying his dues at Trento, Bari, and Empoli.

Our Take on Napoli and Buongiorno

It’s pretty jarring that he’s been so fragile, considering he was a rock at Torino. They are okay numerically, but they are one injury away from being in trouble and could use another lefty.
