Serie A club Napoli have contacted Manchester United about the possible transfer of Mason Greenwood.

This is according to The Athletic, who in an article this morning provide little meat on the bones of the headline.

The article simply reads “Napoli have made contact with Manchester United over a possible deal for Mason Greenwood.

“Greenwood, 22, is expected to leave the Premier League club permanently this summer after spending the season on loan at Getafe in Spain.”

It then continues with a summary of the player’s time at Getafe and the history behind the loan deal.

Although there is little information about Napoli’s advance, the fact that the word “transfer” is used means that it is potentially a deal that would appeal to United, who do not want to send Greenwood back out on loan.

It is also not the first time this week that Greenwood has been linked to Napoli by the press, so the report seems to be a reliable one.

Getafe have gone on record to say that they would be keen to reprise the loan deal for one more season.

Meanwhile, Sir Jim Ratcliffe also left the door open to a possible return to the United side for Greenwood recently, promising that a fresh review of Greenwood’s situation would be undertaken.

Of possible excitement to United fans would be that Napoli’s interest could open the door for a swap deal for one of the Serie A side’s top stars such as Victor Osimhen or Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Kvaratskhelia is one of the hottest wingers on the planet and has scored 11 goals and bagged 8 assists in 31 games this season. He is valued at €80 million by transfermarkt.com.

Whilst 2023/24 was not as prolific for Osimhen as his 31-goal 2022/23 campaign, he still managed to bag 15 goals in 24 games for the Azzurri despite missing a big chunk of midseason due to participating in AFCON and despite his team dropping from first to ninth place in Serie A.

The Nigerian is valued at €110 million.

With United reportedly only looking for around £40 million (€47 million) for Greenwood, the price difference, Napoli’s notoriously difficult negotiator in president Aurelio De Laurentiis and United’s inability to offer Champions League football next season still make a deal for either player a long shot, but it could certainly merit a mention when the two clubs continue their dialogue about the England man.
