After back to back defeats in two cup competitions, Tottenham Hotspur returned to winning ways after beating fellow Premier League strugglers Manchester United 1-0 at home on Sunday.

James Maddison scored the only goal of the match in the first half as Spurs beat Man Utd home and away for the first time in over 30 years.

Maddison, who has missed nearly four weeks with a calf injury, scored from close range after United keeper Andre Onana parried Lucas Bergvall’s shot in the 13th minute.

Bergvall was outstanding during the game, and the 19-year-old midfielder received rich praise from the UK press.

The Daily Mail hailed him as a “real gem” who looks “mature beyond his years”. Man Utd failed to bring him to their academy due to Brexit rules, and Spurs snapped him up. They have given him a 7/10 rating.

They wrote: “A real gem of a player and by being deployed in a deeper role it means Tottenham have playmakers at every level of the attack.

“Manchester United missed out on bringing him into their academy due to Brexit rules. Their loss is Tottenham’s gain. Looks mature beyond his years.”

The Swedish midfielder has made six Premier League starts this season, and a further 12 appearances have come from the bench. He has featured heavily in the Europa League this season, making six starts.

Ange Postecoglou was under a lot of pressure recently following Tottenham’s exist from both the Carabao Cup and the FA Cup.

The victory will give his side a lot of confidence. Spurs are still missing a host of key players through injuries, but Postecoglou believes the squad will get better once the injury problems dry up.

Postecoglou was finally in a position to give starts to playmaker Maddison as well as goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, who was terrific in his first game back since breaking his ankle in November.

The Spurs boss will also be happy to welcome the trio of Brennan Johnson, Destiny Udogie and Wilson Odobert; they were all fit enough to make the bench.
