Recent developments suggest the door may be opening for the young defender to step into the national team setup.

According to a recent update shared by AS, it has come to light that recent developments have opened the doors for the Real Madrid defender to enter the Spanish national team squad.

What’s the story?

The change in circumstances comes after an injury scare involving Chelsea full-back Marc Cucurella

The Spain international was forced off at half-time during his side’s recent match against Leeds United after feeling discomfort in his leg.

Early assessments suggest the problem could be linked to his hamstring, which has raised concerns inside the Spanish Football Federation.

Cucurella is scheduled to undergo an MRI scan to determine the exact nature of the injury.

The results will confirm both the seriousness of the issue and the expected recovery time, which will depend on the extent of the muscle tear.

Chance for Carreras

If the injury proves to be significant, it could create an opening for one of the players who have already been part of Spain’s preliminary squads.

Carreras is among those names, having been included in the last two extended lists, along with Barcelona left-back Alejandro Balde.

Spain manager Luis de la Fuente had already hinted that such changes could happen during the season due to the heavy schedule and physical demands on players.

He explained the situation earlier in the campaign, stating, “Unfortunately, there will be changes to the final World Cup squad because the season is tough and injuries are inevitable.”

He also clarified that the “replacements would come from the preliminary list of 40 or 50 players.”

Among that group are Carreras and Balde, but at this stage, the Real Madrid defender appears to be the leading candidate for a chance.

In fact, he could be given an opportunity in Spain’s upcoming match against Argentina, which is the Finalissima, on March 27 in Qatar.
