According to El Diario de Navarra, the Navarre government will not demand that Athletic remove the Euskal Herria map from their new kit. The design, rendered in the ikurriña and depicting Euskadi and Navarra, has sparked political complaints.
Unión del Pueblo Navarro has threatened court action if the graphic is not withdrawn, describing it as a grave offence to the foral community. Party leader Cristina Ibarrola sent letters to federation president Rafael Louzán, Athletic president Jon Uriarte and Navarre president María Chivite.
Government first vice president and spokesperson Javier Remírez regards official Navarre symbols as neither compromised nor misused, and he played down the shirt detail. His stance contrasts with the conservative party.
The legal framework, including the Lorafna and regional law 4/2020, defines the flag, coat of arms and anthem as Navarra’s exclusive identity symbols, with protection limited to those under article 3.
The administration will not take a position on the kit because Athletic is a legally recognised private association, not a public body.
Previous Athletic shirts have featured the ikurriña, though not as a map. The 2026/2027 strip was unveiled on Wednesday on the club’s official channels.
