The player kicked off his professional career with Liga MX’s Pumas in 2012, working his way through the academy to reach his debut with the senior team against Club America on March 19. He recorded seven goals and seven assists in 180 appearances for Pumas, before going on to see loan stints with Chivas de Guadalajara and Santos Laguna.
In 2021, Van Rankin made the jump to Major League Soccer, signing with the Portland Timbers on loan. The club chose to extend the player’s contract through the end of the 2022 campaign, but declined the purchase option to release him back to Pumas.
Despite best efforts, the midfielder’s one goal and six assists in 65 matches did not impress head coach Giovanni Savarese.
He now joins Necaxa, standing as the team’s third reinforcement under new manager Andres Lillini after the signings of Edson Partida and Juan Pablo Dominguez.
Necaxa is looking to rebuild after a turbulent 2022 Apertura campaign. The team finished in 12th place with 19 points in 17 games and a record of 52-8L-4D, before losing to Tigres UANL in the first round of playoffs.
Following the defeat, the team parted ways with former head coach Jimmy Lozano.
The 2023 Clausura kicks off on January 6, giving Lillini plenty of time to adjust to his new signings.
