Nelson Deossa has shifted his standing at Real Betis, a productive pre-season and a tweaked role under Manuel Pellegrini have pushed his continuity up the agenda.

According to La Colina De Nervion, Vasco da Gama advanced talks to take him back to South America, but Betis’s summer preparations have changed that picture.

Given minutes in friendlies, he has scored three times to lead Betis in pre-season. The latest came on 5 August against Arsenal, a powerful strike from outside the box. His form has also drawn attention in England, with Premier League club representatives monitoring him.

Pellegrini has pushed him higher up, even using him as a striker, to exploit his carrying power, late runs and shooting. That positioning offers an option closer to goal while preserving his midfield value. It does not replace the club’s plan to reinforce that role, it simply adds another solution.

Deossa joined from Monterrey in the summer of 2025 on a contract to 2030, so Betis retain control of his future. The club invested more than 10 million euros, and keeping him would mean a 26-year-old with scope to improve on year one remains in Seville.

Last season he played 33 matches and around 1,500 minutes without scoring. This pre-season has shown a different version, with goals and far greater presence near the area.
