The Nemanja Matić (35) transfer saga looks set to reach its conclusion. The Serbian midfielder is expected to arrive in Lyon tomorrow before completing his move from Stade Rennais to Olympique Lyonnais.
The chance to move to Lyon had seemingly passed. Les Gones have had an interest in the former Manchester United and Chelsea midfielder since the beginning of the transfer window, however, Matić’s own actions seemed to scupper the move.
Matić left Rennes and emptied his locker at the club’s training ground in order to force through his move to OL. Whilst the Serbian international eventually apologised and returned to Brittany, his original decision infuriated Rennes’ executives, who subsequently decided to block the move.
A stalemate ensued. Rumoured interest from the Premier League, notably Fulham, did not yield any concrete advances, although Turkish side Besiktas had been touted as a potential destination for the wantaway midfielder. However, with the end of the transfer window nearing, an agreement has been reached that will finally see Matić join Lyon.
As reported by L’Équipe and RMC Sport, Rennes and Lyon have agreed on a €3m transfer fee. Matić will sign a two-and-a-half-year deal with Les Gones, and he is expected to undergo his medical within the next 24 hours.
