Former Inter Milan captain Beppe Bergomi has addressed Gianluigi Buffon and his recent comments about Italy in the 3-0 defeat to Norway last June.

Buffon’s remarks pointed to the physical and mental fatigue of Inter players following their Champions League final heartbreak.

Appearing on Sky Sport, Bergomi reflected on the Azzurri’s latest 2-0 win over Moldova, but also revisited that summer setback, which Buffon had attributed partly to Inter’s “five wake-up calls in Champions League finals.”

“There are certain teams that are always difficult to face depending on when you meet them,” Bergomi said, with quotes via FCInter1908.

“In June or early September, we always struggle in those matches, and that time, many Inter players had just lost the final in that way.”

Bergomi: ‘Buffon Could Be More Elegant In Inter & Italy Comments’

When colleague Marco Nosotti mentioned Buffon’s comment, Bergomi agreed but questioned the delivery.

“Absolutely, he could have said it more elegantly, in my opinion,” he replied.

“But yes, that was a difficult period. We also had other absences and lost badly, and Norway are a strong side.”

Buffon’s remark, intended to explain Italy’s lack of sharpness, sparked debate given Inter’s heavy representation in the national team.

Bergomi’s response highlights a recurring theme: the physical toll and emotional fatigue faced by Inter’s players after multiple deep European runs.

Last season, Inter lost 5-0 in the Champions League final against a brilliant PSG.

Despite the criticism, those same Nerazzurri have continued to be the backbone of Gennaro Gattuso’s Italy.

Indeed, it is a reminder of the high demands placed on the country’s most consistent club performers.
