Athletic confirmed on Monday that Nerea Nevado and Maite Zubieta will not continue at the club chaired by Jon Uriarte after rejecting new contracts. It is a blow for a team that underwhelmed this season, having been closer to the leaders under David Aznar last year.
Neither will carry on under a head coach who, in principle, is set to be Javi Lerga, although he has yet to renew.
Nevado, 25, from Santurtzi and developed at Bizkerre, posted a farewell video on her social channels. The international and Under-17 world champion appears in black as a montage of goals, play and jokes with team-mates rolls.
She outlines what Athletic means to her, a family dream first shared by her aitite, saying football and the club have always gone hand in hand. She reflects on 10 years as a Lioness, rising through the academy, dreaming of the first team, the armband and San Mamés, and finding a family.
Explaining her exit, she says the path now leads away from Lezama, a hard decision made to test herself, leave home and explore her limits. She thanks team-mates, coaches, medical and support staff and the fans, says she felt loved and supported, and hopes to be remembered for giving everything for the badge.
Several clubs are interested in her next step, including Real Madrid and Atlético in Liga F, Hoffenheim in Germany, Chicago Stars in the United States, Roma with former team-mate Valdezate, Milan, Benfica and Paris FC.
