Inter Milan face a nervous wait over Hakan Calhanoglu after the Turkey midfielder was forced off late in his side’s 1-0 World Cup play-off win over Romania, with the club monitoring his condition closely.
According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Calhanoglu felt his calf tighten after striking a shot from distance in the closing stages and immediately left the pitch.
Initial reports, however, offer encouragement. Early indications suggest the issue was cramp rather than a muscular injury.
If this is indeed the case, Inter boss Cristian Chivu will be relieved it is not more serious.
Turkey join Italy in reaching the play-off final, with both nations now one win away from securing their place at the World Cup.
For Inter, the priority is getting Calhanoglu back fit and available to play Roma.
Given his injury-interrupted season, any recurrence of a calf problem would be a significant blow.
Indeed, both for Inter’s title push and for Calhanoglu’s own future at the club.
Rumours have linked the Turkish star persistently with a move to the Super Lig.
With Galatasaray thought to be amongst the frontrunners.
Which, meanwhile, hinges heavily on him finishing the season in good health.
A full assessment of his condition is expected in the coming days.
