Netflix will consider bidding for some Premier League TV rights after missing out on deals to show matches in Uefa’s club competitions.

According to The Times, the American company bid for the global contract to show Uefa’s Super Cup and for the Champions League rights in Germany from 2027 to 2031.

Although their offers were competitive, Uefa could not unwrap the Super Cup from the rest of its rights, and that they narrowly lost to Paramount for the Champions League rights in Germany.

Paramount are set to secure the bulk of Champions League rights in the United Kingdom from 2027-31, with their bid understood to be considerably higher than the current £1 billion package held by TNT Sports.

The deal will reportedly cover every match, except the first pick on Tuesday nights, which Amazon Prime won in a separate auction.

Netflix has stayed away from traditional sports coverage for years, but it is changing its stance.

The company has tested the waters with select live events, streaming an NFL match last Christmas and the Mike Tyson v Jake Paul boxing bout.

It is now shifting towards longer-running sporting events rather than just one-off games.

The platform has secured rights to show Fifa’s 2027 and 2031 Women’s World Cups in the United States.

It could enter Britain’s football-broadcasting landscape as they seriously consider bidding for Premier League rights, bringing competition for Sky and TNT Sports.
