Stefan de Vrij formed part of Inter Milan’s steely defense that held Sparta Prague at bay in tonight’s narrow 1-0 win at the Epet Arena.
During his post-game interview with Inter TV via FCInterNews, the Dutch center-back confirmed the team’s unwavering ambition to win.
Indeed, Inter came into proceedings in high spirits after a 3-1 triumph against Empoli but were under pressure to deliver.
With Sparta on the verge of elimination, it was always going to be an awkward task for Simone Inzaghi’s side.
However, Lautaro Martinez maintained his resurrection with another vital strike to settle a dramatic contest in Prague.
Meanwhile, Inter’s rock-solid defense held up their end of the bargain.
Even without Francesco Acerbi, the Nerazzurri stood their ground to keep a sixth clean sheet in seven Champions League games this term.
De Vrij deserves much credit as he led by example.
“Yes, we’re in a good position,” De Vrij replied when asked whether Inter are inching closer to achieving their target.
“This was a very important match for our Champions League journey.
“All the teams are close, but we wanted to make it into the top eight, and this is a significant result.
“Starting well was essential. We had a good approach with solid ball circulation.
“They sat back, waiting for us to make a mistake to counter.
“But we managed the situation well with proactive defending and scored a great early goal.
“We tried for a second but couldn’t get it, though we came close.
“In the second half, they pushed harder, looking for opportunities through set-pieces and long throws, but we did well to secure the win.”
De Vrij admitted this win inspired further confidence around the Nerazzurri camp.
“A lot. We were very focused and attentive,” he added.
“When it’s 1-0, the game is always open, and anything can happen, but we did well to close it out.”
