Manuel Neuer has successfully made his World Cup comeback. The Bayern captain returned to the big stage in the German national team’s 7-1 opening victory against Curaçao. Now the 40-year-old is on the verge of a historic milestone.
Manuel Neuer’s return to the German national team was one of the major topics of discussion ahead of the 2026 World Cup. After months of debate and his successful comeback with FC Bayern, national team coach Julian Nagelsmann, as expected, started the veteran in the World Cup opener against Curaçao.
For Neuer, the match was a very special moment.
After the game, the 2014 World Cup champion spoke openly about his feelings and explained that the comeback had felt almost like his first international match. The long wait had only heightened his anticipation for this moment.
The evening was also a success on the field. Germany won convincingly 7-1. Although Neuer conceded a goal, the Bayern keeper was powerless to stop the deflected shot by the Curaçao team.
With his appearance against Curaçao, Neuer has already set an impressive record.
It was his 20th World Cup match. With that, the 40-year-old tied France’s World Cup champion Hugo Lloris, who previously held the record for the most World Cup appearances by a goalkeeper.
For Neuer, however, this tie could be short-lived.
Should the Bayern captain take the field again in the upcoming group stage match against Ivory Coast, he would break the record outright and become the most successful World Cup goalkeeper in history.

There is every reason to believe that Neuer will reach this milestone as early as the next match.
Julian Nagelsmann has clearly designated the 40-year-old as the number one for the tournament. As long as no injury or physical issues get in the way, Neuer is likely to guard the German goal in the upcoming matches as well.
As a result, the record could be extended even further over the course of the tournament.
Neuer made his World Cup debut back in 2010 in South Africa. This was followed by tournaments in Brazil, Russia, Qatar, and now North America.
Of course, the 2014 title win in Brazil remains particularly unforgettable, as the Bayern keeper played a decisive role in the German national team’s fourth World Cup title and was subsequently named the tournament’s best goalkeeper.
A look at the all-time World Cup rankings for goalkeepers illustrates the magnitude of this achievement.
Behind Neuer and Lloris, with 18 appearances each, are Brazil’s World Cup champion Claudio Taffarel and Bayern legend Sepp Maier. Behind them are Dino Zoff, Fabien Barthez, and Iker Casillas, each with 17 World Cup appearances.
Notably, no active goalkeeper is currently anywhere near these numbers.
Manuel Neuer is thus on the verge of definitively claiming the top spot in a very special statistical category. Should Germany continue its run in the World Cup, the Bayern captain could even significantly extend his historic record in the coming weeks.
