FC Bayern kicked off the new season by winning the Super Cup. Captain Manuel Neuer believes his team is well-prepared following their 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund.

FC Bayern has gotten off to a successful start to the new season. With a 2-1 victory over Borussia Dortmund on Saturday evening, the Munich team secured the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup—their first title in their very first competitive match.

Manuel Neuer was understandably pleased after the final whistle. For the Bayern captain, the match against BVB held special significance because, following an unusual preseason, it served as the team’s first true test of where they stand.

“That feels good. We played away against the second-best team in Germany—that’s always a tough battle, and I think the better team won today,” Neuer told Sat.1.

Bayern controlled the action for long stretches, especially in the first half. Nathaniel Brown initially put the record champions ahead, and Michael Olise extended the lead to 2–0 before halftime. After the break, however, Dortmund turned up the pressure and pulled one back through Fabio Silva.

In a frantic closing phase, Munich defended their narrow lead and ultimately held on to secure their first title of the season.

Neuer believes Bayern is ready for the start of the season

For Neuer, the Super Cup also served as an important barometer ahead of the Bundesliga opener. “The Super Cup is always a good way to kick off the season and see where we stand,” emphasized the 40-year-old.

Pre-season preparations for FC Bayern this summer were anything but typical. Due to the World Cup, many players returned from vacation only gradually. Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Dayot Upamecano, for example, joined the team significantly later than most of their teammates.

“The players returned at different times because of the World Cup; we tried to make the best of the situation and also integrate the new players,” Neuer explained.

Despite their varying fitness levels, Bayern already showed a high level of play for long stretches of the match in Dortmund. The new signings also got a chance to shine: Brown was in the starting lineup and immediately scored his first competitive goal for FCB. Ismael Saibari made his competitive debut in the closing stages.

Neuer therefore drew a positive conclusion about the past few weeks and is looking optimistically toward the upcoming challenges: “We’ve worked hard, prepared well, and are now ready for the new season.”

After winning their first title, the focus now shifts to the Bundesliga. There, FC Bayern will host VfB Stuttgart at the Allianz Arena this coming Friday. Following their successful test in Dortmund, Neuer and his teammates are looking to make an immediate statement in the league as well.
