Neuer successor: Bayern was interested in BVB goalkeeper

FC Bayern intensively scouted the goalkeeping market last year and apparently had a keeper from the direct BVB environment on their radar. A transfer did not materialize in the end, but the story shows how concretely the Munich club are pushing ahead with their plans behind Manuel Neuer

FC Bayern have been working intensively on the future of their goalkeeper position for some time now. Even if Manuel Neuer remains the face between the posts, those in charge at Säbener Straße know that the captain’s time is coming to an end. In this context, it is not surprising that the Munich club looked closely at several candidates last spring. One of them: Diant Ramaj

As reported by BILD, the 24-year-old was on the German record champions‘ internal list of candidates even before his move from Ajax Amsterdam to Borussia Dortmund. Ramaj, who is currently on loan at 1. FC Heidenheim, was therefore considered an interesting profile player – young, capable of development and strong in the build-up play. However, a transfer did not take concrete shape. The reason: doubts about his temperament

Why Bayern kept their distance from Ramaj

Internally, Ramaj is said to have been regarded by Bayern bosses as a so-called „hothead“. It was precisely this attribute that ultimately proved to be a deal-breaker. Munich were not looking for a goalkeeper who would impress in sporting terms but who would pose risks in terms of character – especially not in a sensitive phase in which the medium-term successor to a club icon like Manuel Neuer is at stake

Instead, FC Bayern opted for Jonas Urbig at the end of January. The young keeper has exactly what they are looking for: calmness, intelligence, development potential – and the willingness to grow step by step. Urbig has already confirmed this assessment and has shown himself to be a serious option for the future with several stable performances

Ramaj’s future in Dortmund remains open

Ramaj’s path has been varied so far. After joining Borussia Dortmund in early 2025, he first went on loan to FC Copenhagen before taking the next step to Heidenheim last summer. There, the keeper gained valuable Bundesliga experience and was regularly the focus of international scouts. Most recently, representatives of Arsenal FC are said to have been on site several times to watch Ramaj

The 24-year-old will initially return to BVB in the summer of 2026. The situation there is clear: if Gregor Kobel stays, there is little prospect of playing time. Another transfer – possibly to the Premier League – is therefore considered realistic. For FC Bayern, on the other hand, the Ramaj issue is closed. With Urbig, the Munich club already has its preferred candidate for the future in-house.
