Manuel Neuer has spoken out about the current goalkeeping situation at FC Bayern, not only backing Jonas Urbig but also clearly outlining his own role in the transition to a new generation

In an interview with YouTube format „At Broski – Die Sport-Show“, the 39-year-old spoke openly about responsibility, team spirit and the special dynamic in the goalkeeping position at the German record champions

It quickly became clear that Neuer no longer sees himself exclusively as the number one between the posts, but increasingly also as a mentor and stability factor for the future. „I also know the other side when you have to fight,“ explained the 2014 world champion, recalling his own beginnings. The path from the U19s to the professional game, the role as third goalkeeper and waiting for opportunities are experiences that still shape him today. It is precisely this knowledge that Neuer now wants to pass on

Neuer sees it as his duty

The Bayern captain emphasized that he sees it as his „duty“ to support the club in such a way that the positive development in the goalkeeping position is also secured in the long term. His statements provide a deep insight: Neuer is no longer just concerned with personal commitments, but with the big picture. „We see ourselves as a unit,“ he said with regard to the goalkeeping team, which includes Sven Ulreich and Jonas Urbig alongside him

Urbig in particular explicitly highlighted Neuer. The 22-year-old, who moved to Munich from Cologne at the start of 2025, has already been given important minutes this season. Urbig stood between the posts in the DFB Cup in particular, when Neuer was suspended – and impressed. „He played in both games and did well,“ said Neuer. For the veteran, this is not a matter of course, but a signal that the path he has chosen is the right one

Support instead of competition

The tone set by Neuer is remarkable. Instead of competition or possessiveness, he talks about mutual support and motivation. In training, it’s about „motivating each other with a fighting spirit“, pushing each other and benefiting from each other. This environment is particularly crucial for a young goalkeeper like Urbig to be able to develop

This attitude fits in with FC Bayern’s current philosophy. The Munich club does not want to force the transition in goal abruptly, but rather shape it in a controlled manner. Neuer, whose contract is still an issue at Säbener Straße, plays a central role in this. His experience, his presence and his acceptance in the dressing room are factors that cannot simply be replaced

Growing prospects for Urbig

For Urbig, the words of the long-serving regular goalkeeper are more than just a pat on the back. They are a clear sign that the club and, in particular, Neuer himself have confidence in his development. The fact that Neuer speaks openly about how important it is to give young players space and actively support them is also likely to be closely noted internally

At the same time, the Bayern captain makes it clear that there are no solo efforts. „We support each other,“ is the clear message. This self-image as a unit could become decisive in the coming months – especially when things get serious in sporting terms and personnel decisions are pending in goal.
