Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner has claimed that he was never in doubt that Marc Guehi would stay despite interest from Newcastle United.

Newcastle have called off their pursuit of the centre-back after Crystal Palace rejected four bids and refused to budge from their financial demands.

Guehi was keen on the move to Newcastle but decided against forcing a move and has been the club captain at Crystal Palace this season.

There were rumours that Palace would be open to a last-minute deal if Newcastle were prepared to meet their demands but Glasner has shut the door on any surprises on deadline day.

The Crystal Palace boss claimed that he never felt that Guehi would leave the club and congratulated the hierarchy for holding on to the centre-back this summer.

“Congrats to the club and the owner, they never gave in.”

Newcastle may now be unlikely to sign another centre-back in the remaining hours of the window after missing out on Guehi.
