‘Never say never’: Club Brugge head coach Nicky Hayen responds to Celtic rumours

After the departure of Brendan Rodgers from Celtic, the Scottish giants have this week been linked with a move for Club Brugge head coach Nicky Hayen. The former Beveren man took over as head coach of the side on an interim basis, but ended up winning the title a few months later despite the side being adrift in the league when he took charge. Last season he guided the side through a successful Champions League campaign and won the domestic cup. It is no wonder that he is being linked with jobs abroad, but at this moment in time, Club Brugge seem a much better prospect to manage than Celtic.

Speaking to HLN on the rumours, Hayen insisted that he was understandably happy at Club Brugge. However, on the link to Celtic, Hayen did say ‘Never say never in football’. It seems unlikely that Hayen would swap one of the top jobs in Belgian football for Celtic at this moment in time, given that the Scottish side are not being run in a way that is likely to attract Hayen from Club Brugge. However, it would be a mistake to underestimate the pull of a side like Celtic. Yet in Belgium, Hayen has a chance to bring some history to Club Brugge as they chase their 20th legaue title. At the moment, it appears to be a two horse race between Club Brugge and defending champions Union St Gilloise.
