The Red Dragons have joined the Baggies in the race to sign Alex Palmer.

Wrexham are set to rival West Brom in the race to sign Ipswich Town outcast Alex Palmer.

This has come from a report by the Daily Mail, who have claimed that the Red Dragons have asked Ipswich about the possibility of having Palmer as their new goalkeeper for the 2026-27 campaign.

There has already been a bit of needle between Wrexham and West Brom after the Welsh outfit landed former Baggies loanee Danny Imray on a permanent deal from Crystal Palace, with the defender linking up at the Racecourse Ground for a reported fee of £5m.

And now Wrexham are looking to get ahead of the Baggies for another one of their top targets, with many connected to The Hawthorns wanting to see Palmer return given his limited opportunities at Portman Road and the fact he came through the youth ranks in the Black Country.

As per a report by the Daily Mail, Wrexham have entered the race to sign Ipswich Town goalkeeper Alex Palmer.

Throughout the summer transfer window, Palmer has been linked with a return back to The Hawthorns with West Brom after losing his number one spot at Portman Road.

The report by the Daily Mail also states that Wrexham have been talking to Sunderland about Anthony Patterson, although he is priced at around £8m.

It’s a more appealing deal to go through with Palmer, with the 29-year-old reportedly valued at just £3.5m.

After joining Ipswich from West Brom during the January transfer window of 2025, Palmer was a regular for the Tractor Boys as they suffered relegation back to the Championship, and then played their first 10 games on their return to the second tier.

But an untimely calf injury meant he was displaced by Christian Walton, and never returned to the first-team fold as Ipswich gained promotion back to the big time.

Meanwhile, Ipswich, now led by Gary O’Neil, have brought in two new goalkeepers in the form of Kayne van Oevelen and Kjell Scherpen, meaning Palmer has been pushed further down the pecking order and set for a move back to the Championship.

West Brom will be worried by emerging Wrexham interest

While West Brom supporters were getting excited at the prospect of Alex Palmer returning to The Hawthorns, talks over a move during the last few weeks have quietened, and now big fears will be emerging that Wrexham could swipe another one of their targets.

Like Imray, Palmer may well be attracted by a move to Wrexham over Albion, with the Red Dragons standing a favourable chance of being involved in the promotion mix after narrowly missing out on the play-offs last term.

Not to mention Wrexham has much more pulling power when it comes to finances, with that demonstrated by the club paying £5m to secure Imray’s services, something the Baggies simply couldn’t afford.

So for Albion, they must try and accelerate the movement of a Palmer deal immediately, otherwise Wrexham could well swoop in and land another player that could have been crucial to Albion moving up the Championship table under James Morrison.
