One of the operations FC Barcelona completed in the last few days was the renewal of the center-back Andreas Christensen, whose previous contract with the Blaugrana club was set to expire on 30th June.
With this renewal, the Catalans ensured the presence of an experienced defender, whose skills and versatility can be quite valuable to the team going into the next season, even though his recurrent injury problems raised quite a lot of doubts about his physical condition.
As a result, it appeared somewhat baffling that the Dane was given a two-year, instead of a single year, extension. However, a report from SPORT explains how Barcelona have taken some measures to remain in charge of the situation if the center-back’s performances are not in line with their expectations next season.
In this regard, the one major point that would help the Catalans would be the presence of a clause that would allow them to unilaterally terminate the contract of the defender if he does not play in 30% of games for Hansi Flick’s side during the 2026-27 season.
Thus, if his physical condition does not improve, the Blaugranes would be able to end the defender’s contract in only a year’s time. They would have to pay a small compensation to the player in such a case, but they would still have this option.
Meanwhile, the center-back has also significantly reduced his wages with this renewal, and a major part of his wages would now be composed of appearance-based bonuses.
Thus, with this renewal, Barcelona have significantly lowered their wage bill, kept an experienced and skilled center-back in their squad for the next season, and also ensured they would have a way out if Andreas Christensen’s physical condition does not improve. Hopefully, the Dane would return to his best form next season, and fulfill both the two years of this new contract.
