Sheffield Wednesday shared a clip on social media of Barry Bannan scoring an excellent free-kick in training.

Sheffield Wednesday are set for a major overhaul of the playing squad this summer as they gear up for their first season under their new owners.

The Owls’ were fearing for the future of the club after they had entered administration last season following the mismanagement of Dejphon Chansiri.

That left the club facing inevitable relegation, and the squad had been ripped apart, with Henrik Pedersen calling on a host of young players week in, week out in the Championship.

However, the takeover has brought fresh optimism at Hillsborough, and Wednesday have started work on building a squad that can compete for promotion, with Harry Gray, Callum Slattery, Louie Barry and Sil Swinkels among the new recruits so far.

But, there’s no denying that the most high-profile signing the Owls have made so far is the deal that brought Barry Bannan back to the club.

The midfielder is a legend at Hillsborough due to the loyalty and quality he displayed for over a decade after joining Wednesday from Crystal Palace in 2015.

It had seemed like he had played his last game for the club in the previous campaign, as he was given an emotional send-off before agreeing to join Millwall, as they sought midfield reinforcements to help their promotion push.

The Lions failed to reach the Premier League, and with Bannan not playing as often as he would’ve liked, a return to Wednesday was finalised.

So, fans are excited to see the Scotsman back in the blue-and-white shirt, and Wednesday offered a reminder of Bannan’s undoubted quality as they shared a clip on social media of the 36-year-old curling a free-kick into the top corner with excellent technique.

Obviously, this is only a free-kick from training, but it is a reminder of just how good Bannan is on the ball, and he will be integral to Pedersen’s side this season.

Even at 36, the former Aston Villa man has kept himself in great shape, and, providing he is still fit and up for the battle, he will be able to make a huge impact in League One.

That’s because his technical ability will be a level above most, and he also has a great football brain, so he will be at the centre of everything Wednesday do in terms of building up play and trying to create chances.

Bannan was Wednesday’s best player prior to his move to Millwall, and, even with some exciting new recruits, he will be the talisman again this season.

Plus, his love for the club, and his leadership, means he will be vital in bringing what is going to be a new-look squad together, as whilst Wednesday have brought in a lot of good players, it’s not going to be easy to click immediately.
