Liam Rosenior is expected to sign his contract and be announced as Chelsea’s new coach later today, after leaving our sister club Strasbourg.

He’s been great managing there, but before that his experience was limited to pretty short spells at Hull City and Derby. It was at the latter stop where he worked with Wayne Rooney, as the former England striker’s assistant, before taking over from him after Rooney’s sacking.

“He’s taken chances, and hopefully that pays off because I think Liam is as good a coach as I’ve ever worked with,” Rooney said on his BBC show.

“His detail, how he approaches the day-to-day, he’s as good as I’ve worked with. Liam was so important for me. He was incredible in his coaching ability. I was more of the manager and dealing with players and everything.

“So I learned a lot from him from that point of view and then I think he’s done a great job as a whole.”

Given that Rooney was worked with the likes of Sir Alex Ferguson, Fabio Capello and so on in his amazing career, that’s pretty high praise. We’re assuming he’s talking about coaches he’s played for, as well as have worked under him.

We all know this is a risky move, but it’s one we’re excited about without doubt.
