On Monday, Wisła Płock announced Pavol Staňo as the team’s new coach, replacing Maciej Bartoszek. The Slovakian signed a contract with the club until June 2024.

Former coach Bartoszek was dismissed one week ago, with the Nafciarze having collected only one point from their first four games of 2022. The 2-0 defeat at Raków Częstochowa was his last in charge. Under caretaker boss Łukasz Nadolski, Wisła collected a first win since December at the weekend – a 3-1 victory over Górnik Łęczna.

New coach Staňo arrives in Płock with assistant Norbert Gula, having most recently led Žilina in his homeland. The former defender has experience in Poland – most notably with his four years at Korona Kielce, but also having spent time at Jagiellonia Białystok, Polonia Bytom, Podbeskidzie Bielsko-Biała and Bruk-Bet Termalica Nieciecza. He also worked at the latter as the club’s assistant following his retirement.

Results on the field are not Wisła’s only problem, as Weszło reported only last week that the club’s financial problems continue to spiral. According to their report, “the financial liquidity of the club has been seriously disturbed”, whilst the payment of some players’ salaries are reportedly at least “three or four weeks” behind schedule.

Staňo will lead Wisła for the first time against his old club, Jagiellonia, on Sunday.
