Real Madrid’s preparations for the first match of the new year have been disrupted by worrying fitness updates, adding to the challenges already facing the squad.

Journalist Guillermo Rai has reported that, alongside Kylian Mbappe, who is confirmed to miss the upcoming clash against Real Betis, defender Dean Huijsen was also absent from team training.

Mbappe’s unavailability was already a major blow for Real Madrid, with the forward ruled out of the Betis fixture.

Furthermore, there are also doubts surrounding his involvement in the Spanish Super Cup.

While Mbappe could still travel with the squad, current indications suggest he is unlikely to feature in the semi-final against Atletico Madrid, making his short-term outlook uncertain.

Concern for Real Madrid

Now, the unexpected concern revolves around Huijsen. The 20-year-old centre-back, who joined Madrid after his spell at Bournemouth, did not train with his teammates, immediately casting doubt over his availability for the Betis match.

Although no official diagnosis has been communicated, his absence places him in the doubtful category, pending further clarification from head coach Xabi Alonso during the pre-match press conference.

If Huijsen is ultimately ruled out, the situation could become problematic for Alonso.

This is because Eder Militao remains sidelined with a long-term injury, significantly limiting options at the back.

While Antonio Rudiger and David Alaba are available, there are concerns over workload and form. Alaba, in particular, has struggled to return to his best level in recent months.

With Real Madrid under pressure to start the year strongly and deliver positive results, Alonso will be hoping to have as many first-choice players available as possible.

Defensive stability remains crucial, especially against a Betis side known for their attacking threat.
