Morocco's U20 team made history against Spain as the green card was officially used for the first time in football during the FIFA U20 World Cup currently hosted in Chile.

How does the green card work?

The innovation allows head coaches to challenge refereeing decisions and request VAR review with maximum of 2 appeals per match.

FIFA hopes the system will improve fairness & reduce refereeing controversy.

First use in Morocco vs Spain

In the 78 minute, Spain were awarded penalty. Moroccan coach Mohamed Ouahbi immediately raised the green card. The referee reviewed the footage & overturned the penalty call instead booking the Spanish player.

FIFA confirmed the card will continue to be tested throughout the competition with the possibility of expanding it to other tournaments if successful.

Match outcome

Morocco sealed 2 - 0 win to top the group with 3 point. Brazil & Mexico sit behind on one point each after drawing 2 - 2.

Ouahbi's men will next face Brazil on Wednesday in high stakes showdown.
