Giovanni Malagò is the new president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC).
The election came at the end of the federal assembly convened following Gabriele Gravina’s resignation following Italy’s umpteenth failure to qualify for the World Cup.
The former CONI president won a majority of the vote (68.58% of the vote), beating out challenger Giancarlo Abete.
After the election, Malagò answered several questions at a press conference, including one about his relationship with Roma.
The FIGC president was clear about his support for the Giallorossi: “There’s nothing worse than someone who denies their own history, especially if it’s family. For 13 years as CONI president, I’ve always been an institutional figure. It’s impossible to comment on this.”
Giovanni Malagò didn’t renounce his faith in Roma on the sidelines of the press conference after being elected president of the Italian Football Federation (FIGC). The former CONI president emphasized the importance of professionalism without being hypocritical: “Shouldn’t we celebrate in a certain way at the stadium? But that’s very provincial. I don’t watch Obama during Chicago Bulls victories… they’re heads of state. Look at the royal family, with Prince William celebrating for Aston Villa. The important thing is how you behave, but you should never renounce that.”
