Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder could look to make a raft of changes in the January transfer window after a dreadful start to the season, with Gus Hamer tipped to leave the club.

The Blades entered the 2025/26 campaign having missed out on promotion last term in cruel fashion, despite finishing their Championship season with 90 points.

Ruben Selles’ appointment as manager proved to be ill-fated and saw the Spaniard sacked after six-straight defeats.

Chris Wilder was brought back for a third stint as the Steel City side’s boss, but things haven’t gone swimmingly under his leadership either.

Despite victories against Blackburn Rovers and Watford, United have lost a further six league contests with Wilder in charge, leaving them 22nd in the Championship after 15 matches.

Given that a promotion fight was the goal going into this season, scrapping to remain in the division isn’t what anyone at Bramall Lane expected, which means that a vast amount of activity may take place in the January window.

Football League World recently exclusively revealed that Sheffield United were looking to end the loan deals of Louie Barry, Tyler Bindon and Ben Godfrey, who have all failed to impress at Bramall Lane.

Outgoings aren’t likely to stop there, as a number of other operators in Wilder’s squad haven’t been up to scratch so far this season.

When queried on who might leave the club in the winter window, Football League World’s Sheffield United fan pundit, Jimmy (AKA Blades Ramble), highlighted three potential candidates he could see moving on to pastures new.

“I think there will be a lot of changes in January,” stated Jimmy.

“I think Tom Cannon is likely to leave.

“I think Ryan One might go out on loan, depending on which formation Wilder wants to stick with beyond January.

“I think there's a chance Gus Hamer might get sold. I hope not, but I think there's a chance that it happens.

“There are a few who could be moving out.”

Sheffield United must keep hold of Gus Hamer in January

Out of the three players Jimmy mentioned, Sheffield United can’t afford to part ways with Hamer in the January window.

He has been vital for United’s success in the past though, and if a relegation battle is what Wilder has to contend with, the Dutchman could provide the edge that keeps his side up.

Allowing Hamer to exit in the summer afterward may satisfy any desire he has to move on from the Steel City side, but cashing in on his services in January would be a hammer blow for United’s hopes this season and could lead to supporters genuinely fearing the worst when it comes to relegation.

Cannon hasn’t featured heavily this season, making just four Championship starts thus far and will likely be in search of more playing time.

Given that Preston North End showed interest in his services during the summer, it wouldn’t be unlikely for the Lilywhites to revisit a potential loan deal in January.

One is yet to make a single start for the Blades this season and is another player who will likely pursue more playing time with a move in January.

Given that the Scotsman is still 19 years of age and has plenty more potential to tap into, a loan deal involving a League One club would make sense for both parties, allowing the defender to play more while Wilder decreases the size of his squad for the moment.
