The Blades playmaker's future could be away from Bramall Lane

Sheffield United playmaker, Gustavo Hamer, will reportedly seek an exit from Bramall Lane if his current employers do not achieve promotion to the Premier League this season.

That is according to Football Insider, with the Blades hoping to stride up the Championship table throughout the second half of the campaign under Chris Wilder, who was appointed as United boss for the third time in September, some three months after he was controversially replaced by Ruben Selles, whose six-game tenure in the Steel City proved to be nothing short of a disaster.

In recent weeks, there had been a major upturn in fortunes in S2, although United were soon brought back down to earth last Friday with a disappointing 2-0 defeat to West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns, with the aforementioned Wilder left furious about his side's second-half performance in the West Midlands as they succumbed to strikes from Albion's attacking duo of Aune Heggebo and Karlan Grant.

The defeat, and further results across the weekend, saw the Blades slip down to 18th in the Championship table, having accumulated 23 points from their opening 21 matches.

There was, of course, plenty of change at Bramall Lane in a summer which initially saw Wilder depart, with a handful of high-profile names securing moves to European top-flight sides, such as Anel Ahmedhodzic and Vini Souza, who left for Feyenoord and VfL Wolfsburg respectively.

Hamer, unsurprisingly, saw intense transfer interest continue to surround his services after a stellar campaign which saw him named as the Championship's Player of the Season at the EFL Awards in April, despite the fact United were eventually consigned to a second successive campaign in the second tier after losing to Sunderland in the play-off final at Wembley Stadium.

It has since been a frustrating half-year for the Brazilian-born playmaker, who could be on his way out of the club if their fortunes do not improve drastically in a short timeframe.

Fresh Gus Hamer, Sheffield United exit stance emerges amid recent Chris Wilder contract revelation

Hamer had been United's standout performer within his first two full seasons in the Steel City after initially securing a high-profile transfer from Coventry City in August 2023, with the Sky Blues receiving a reported £15m sum from United, who had returned to the Premier League months prior under the management of Paul Heckingbottom.

The playmaker was a rare beacon of light in the Blades' dismal campaign, during which Wilder returned to Bramall Lane in December 2023, hitting double figures when it came to his combined total of goals and assists.

After posting 10 goals and eight assists during the regular season last term, Hamer became the subject of intense transfer speculation during Selles' only transfer window in charge, although, to the surprise of many, he would remain a Blades player, at least in the short-term.

It has been a frustrating campaign for the 28-year-old, who has started 10 of his 15 Championship appearances thus far, scoring just once on top of his stunning halfway line strike against Birmingham City at St. Andrew's in the EFL Cup back in August.

Wilder recently revealed that the Blades were hopeful of seeing Hamer and Tyrese Campbell put pen to paper on new deals, with the former's current contract set to expire in 19 months' time.

“I've pushed that button already on both those players. We don't really want to lose players to frees. Unfortunately, sometimes they run it down and that's difficult," he said.

“Then you think there has to be a succession plan in terms of where you work off the back of that. But we've already pushed that button with Gus's agent and Ty's agent and seen what the feedback and enthusiasm is back off them.

It was reported by Football Insider earlier in the week that United are keen to retain Hamer's services at all costs at the turn of the year, amid previous claims that the midfielder would be free to leave Bramall Lane on various conditions.

However, the same publication now claim that Hamer will push for a move to the Premier League in the summer if United do not end their current exile from the Premier League, having previously attracted interest from current Championship champions and Yorkshire rivals, Leeds United.

At present, such revelations mean there is a high probability that Hamer will leave the Steel City club in the summer, with the Blades needing to make up a vast amount of ground if they were to be promoted.

Wilder is currently preparing for an intense transfer window, as his side are only four points clear of the relegation zone at present, and a further 11 behind Hull City, who currently occupy the final play-off spot.

Next up for the Blades is a home clash with Birmingham City at Bramall Lane in a 3PM kick-off on Saturday afternoon.
