VfL Wolfsburg is facing a massive upheaval – and could be in for a real surprise. Following the departure of coach Paul Simonis and the imminent departure of sporting director Sebastian Schindzielorz, the Bundesliga club is not only looking for a new coach, but also a strong man for the sporting management.
According to a report in Sport BILD , Lower Saxony are even looking at Christoph Freund from FC Bayern – as well as Sebastian Kehl from Borussia Dortmund. Both are regarded as top managers in the Bundesliga, have first-class networks and extensive experience in squad development.
The fact that Freund, of all people, who has only been in charge at FC Bayern since the summer of 2023, is on Wolfsburg’s list is causing a stir. The 47-year-old is one of the architects of the new Bayern project under Vincent Kompany and has made a decisive contribution to rejuvenating and stabilizing the squad. His contract at Säbener Straße runs until 2027 – a short-term departure is considered extremely unlikely.
A move for Sebastian Kehl, who is tied to BVB until 2027, also seems hardly realistic at present. Nevertheless, the list of candidates shows that Wolfsburg is clearly looking for a great solution – a manager with charisma, experience and a clear sporting vision.
In addition to the prominent names, according to Sport BILD , Jonas Boldt (most recently HSV) and Sven Mislintat (formerly of Stuttgart and Dortmund) are also being highly touted. Both are currently without a club and could therefore take over the position immediately. Mislintat in particular, known for his good scouting network, is considered a serious candidate.
Fabian Wohlgemuth (VfB Stuttgart) and Marcel Schäfer (RB Leipzig) are also on the list – whereby the latter has a Wolfsburg past and is said to still have many advocates internally.
According to several media reports, the replacement of Sebastian Schindzielorz is already a done deal, while managing director Peter Christiansen remains in office and will coordinate the search for a new sporting director.
