Italian giants AC Milan officially announced the appointment of Ruben Amorim as new manager on Tuesday, confirming the arrival of the Portuguese after much speculation.

Amorim has signed a reported two-year contract at San Siro, finding work at a European heavyweight just six months after abruptly leaving Manchester United. He replaces Massimiliano Allegri, who was fired last month after a poor end of season saw the Rossoneri miss out on Champions League football.

"There are ambitions that stay with you throughout your career, and for me, coaching AC Milan has always been one of them," Amorim told the club’s media. "I know perfectly well what this club represents: history, prestige, and an extraordinary fan base around the world.

“It's a challenge I face with pride and enthusiasm, fully aware of what these colours mean. I can't wait to get started and experience the passion that drives AC Milan every day.”

Former Sporting boss Amorim becomes the third Portuguese to manage Milan in the space of two years. Paulo Fonseca was charged with overhauling both the cultural and tactical values at the club, but was dismissed after just 24 matches in December 2024, after which successor Sérgio Conceição lasted a similarly brief 31 matches at the helm before losing his job at the end of the season.

Amorim’s somewhat acrimonious departure from United has done little to affect his reputation in the eyes of the Milan hierarchy, who trace his phenomenal success with Sporting as the starting point of their admiration for the 41-year-old. Amorim revived Sporting’s fortunes during his four-and-a-half years at Alvalade, winning two Primeira Liga titles.

"We've been following Rúben for years,” said Milan owner Gerry Cardinale in a statement. “His journey at Sporting has been extraordinary and perfectly matches the style of play we're looking for. He's one of the most talented and innovative coaches of the new European generation: young, ambitious, with a clear footballing identity and a well-defined tactical approach.

"Rúben believes in attacking, high-intensity football. His philosophy fits perfectly with our vision, and his leadership qualities, combined with his ability to develop players, have impressed us deeply. We believe in him and are thrilled to welcome him to the Club.”
