The uncertain future of Dayot Upamecano is forcing FC Bayern to take action. Even if the Munich club are still hoping to extend the French defender’s contract, they have long been sounding out the market in the background. In the event of a summer departure, they are intensively examining which profiles fit in with their new sporting direction. A surprising name has now emerged: Luka Vuskovic
The centre-back, who is only 18 years old and has been loaned to Hamburger SV by Tottenham Hotspur, has developed into the Hanseatic club’s defensive leader in a very short space of time. Despite his young age, Vuskovic is surprisingly composed, strong in tackles and present in the build-up play. His performances have not gone unnoticed internationally either
As the English portal TEAMtalk reports, Bayern have also enquired about the Croatian international. According to the report, Vuskovic is on an extended shortlist for Munich, who want to be prepared in the event of Upamecano’s departure. Alongside established names such as Marc Guehi, Ibrahima Konaté or Nico Schlotterbeck, Vuskovic would be a much younger, long-term approach

However, a short-term transfer seems out of the question. According to TEAMtalk, Tottenham, who only signed Vuskovic permanently in the summer of 2025, show no willingness to let the defender go. On the contrary: Spurs are extremely satisfied with the development of their talent and are even considering ending the current loan early in the winter
The Croatian has been loaned to HSV until the summer of 2026, but Tottenham have secured a return option in the loan agreement. The background to this is their own personnel situation in central defence. They are looking for reinforcements in London – and Vuskovic is seen internally as a possible solution from their own ranks
The situation is complex for FC Bayern. On the one hand, Vuskovic’s age, profile and development make him a perfect fit for Munich, who are increasingly looking for players with development potential. On the other hand, it is clear that Tottenham will not let one of Europe’s biggest defensive talents leave without further ado. Vuskovic is still under contract with Spurs until 2030
Accordingly, a scenario for the future is more realistic than a short-term move. Should Upamecano leave the record champions in the summer, Bayern will have to prioritize other options first
Ultimately, everything depends on Dayot Upamecano’s decision. As long as the extension is not off the table, Bayern are deliberately acting cautiously. However, it is also clear that the club does not want to be unprepared. The latest developments show that several scenarios are being considered in parallel at Säbener Straße.
