New Rangers Owners Have Pledged A Long-Term Plan But Rangers Need Success Yesterday

Ibrox Noise has been quite vocal about our thoughts on the new ownership at Rangers. The new men, the American owners Cavanagh and Marathe, have finally broken their silence and begun commenting to the press, to Rangers TV, and of course, at that recent AGM. We’ve already covered how these will no longer be a standard de facto accountability session for Rangers hierarchy and have been abolished, albeit the owners do say they will still remain in touch with other shareholders. We will believe that when we see it.
No, the simple quote that we were intrigued by was the notion that we are not here to throw money in, win a trophy, and run off into the sunset. This was a very interesting comment that the owners have made. The problem is, they are now already saying they are not here to win trophies.
Okay, that is a bit of an exaggeration. We know that many fans will try to look at a bigger picture here. The problem is, we don’t have the time to look at the bigger picture. We need trophies yesterday. Every season that passes that we don’t get one is further and further behind Celtic. While the new owners may have felt they were being sensible and showing caution rather than throwing it to the wind, at the same time, a true supporter of Rangers, someone who understands this club, will know how immediate must-win and trophies are.
To say that you’re not just going to throw money in, win trophies, and run off into the sunset, while we respect the notion of not abandoning the club, at the same time, we do need urgency here. A better quote might have been, we are not here just to throw money and win trophies. We are here to be in the long term. It sounded instead like their intentions were a little vague.
A long-term plan perhaps, but a slight overlooking of how desperately urgent it is at Ibrox to win trophies. How often and urgently we need to win matches. These are critical absolutes. There cannot be any deviation from these. So, although these guys seem to know who Rangers are to an extent, we do wonder if they realise how utterly urgent it is to win. They didn’t have that at Leeds. Not to the same extent anyway. They certainly didn’t have it at the 49ers. They don’t have it at these other two franchises. But at Rangers, winning is absolutely vital.
Frankly, at Ibrox Noise, it might sound shallow to say it, but we’d actually take somebody throwing in cash, winning the title, and then running off. Because then we’d have a foundation to build on with whoever else took over. Now yes, we acknowledge and endorse the idea of a long-term plan. But there is the urgency that we need to win.
The longer that a long-term plan takes, the further Celtic get away. We really hope that this is just lip service and they’re trying to show caution. And that they will indeed be doing everything they can to go and beat Celtic. They did say things to that effect as well in the massive media front that they’ve put up here. There was a big media assault that they offered and it did cover a lot of topics.
And yes, they have spoken about how they want to be first. In all fairness, that would be a basic. But we need to know that they truly understand how critical it actually is. It’s not just want to be first, we must be first. There is no negotiation. Let’s hope that they understand that quickly and do the things it takes to achieve it.
