There are big changes coming to Liverpool’s frontline this summer.
Mohamed Salah of course is leaving - with the club reaching a deal to rip up the Egyptian King’s £400k per week contract one year before it was due to expire.
That departure will open up a spot in Arne Slot’s starting XI - with Salah still being trusted to start most of the matches.
Now comes the news from Italy that Federico Chiesa is likely to rejoin a team in Serie A at the end of the season.
The 28-year-old moved to Anfield in September 2024 and has been unable to make a decisive breakthrough under Slot. A lack of form - and frequent lack of fitness - has meant that the Italian international has had to get used to life on the bench.
Calcio Mercato is now reporting that Chiesa will be available come June for a fee of between £13m and £17m - which would represent a bigger fee than the £12.5m Richard Hughes paid to sign him from Juventus.
AC Milan, Napoli Roma and Juve have all been mentioned as a potential destination for the £140k per week forward - who has made only one Premier League start all season.
“The situation surrounding Chiesa is anything but rosy, and barring any unexpected developments, he'll be leaving Liverpool in June,” the report reads.
“This summer, however, new opportunities could arise —keep an eye on Roma, Napoli, Milan, and Juventus in Italy— with the Reds asking for between €15 and €20 million for a permanent transfer.”
Slot has been reluctant to use Chiesa at his usual right-wing station - instead utilising him as a false nine. But if he and Salah both leave - as is overwhelmingly likely - then it leaves Slot with a dearth of options on that side.
There is the possibility of Jeremie Frimpong becoming first-choice right winger but he will also be required to play further back as a wing-back or right-back.
Factor in the 25-year-old’s persistent injury troubles and you realise he cannot be relied upon to carry Salah’s threat on his own.
It all adds up to Liverpool spending a big fee this summer on a player who can play right wing. An exact stylistic match for Salah is going to be difficult to find - given his superhuman output over the last nine years - and so Slot and Hughes will have to adapt.
The likes of Michael Olise and Yan Diomande could be out of reach owing to their expensive price tags and Paris Saint-Germain are not willing to sell Bradley Barcola, Desire Doue or Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
