The new trial in Argentina into the circumstances of Diego Maradona’s 2020 death has been pushed back to mid-April after a reduced witness list and a revised timetable, the court in San Isidro said on Wednesday.

Originally due to begin on 17 March, it will now start on 14 April with two hearings a week, unless the court decides otherwise.

The proceedings had been planned across three sitting days per week.

A previous process was annulled in May 2025 after more than 20 hearings and 44 witnesses, amid scandal over one of the three judges secretly collaborating on a documentary mini-series about the case. She has since been removed.

Seven members of the medical team around Maradona, including a doctor, psychiatrist, psychologist and nurses, will stand trial to determine whether there was fatal negligence, or even conscious negligence, that led to his death. The court has not indicated how long the case could last.

Maradona died aged 60 on 25 November 2020 from cardiorespiratory arrest and pulmonary oedema while recuperating at a private residence in Tigre, north of Buenos Aires, after an uncomplicated neurosurgery.
