Sammie Szmodics is set for a spell on the sidelines after undergoing surgery
Sammie Szmodics has confirmed that he has undergone surgery following a knee issue suffered in Ipswich Town’s 1-0 win over West Brom last weekend.
The forward started in Kieran McKenna’s side, but was only capable of playing 20 minutes before being forced off with yet another fitness issue.
The Ireland international has struggled for consistent game time at Portman Road, with availability proving a real issue since his switch from Blackburn Rovers in the 2024 summer window.
He featured 20 times in the Premier League last season, including 13 starts, scoring four times, and he’s made 10 appearances from the team’s first 12 games this campaign.
However, he is now set for a spell on the sidelines following this latest setback, which will come as a blow to Ipswich’s promotion push.

Szmodics has posted a message to supporters on social media confirming his surgery, which should rule him out of action for some time.
The forward has made it clear he wants to be back sooner or later, but no timeframe has yet been given for a possible return to fitness.
“Operation all done,” he wrote, via his Instagram page.
“Back in no time.”
Szmodics signed for Ipswich in the 2024 summer window following the club’s promotion to the Premier League.
However, he was unable to help the team remain in the top flight, with a 19th place finish leading to their relegation after just one season.
It’s been reported that the fee to sign him could rise to a total of £11 million, with the Ireland international arriving off the back of a campaign at Ewood Park in which he scored 27 times in the Championship.
But it will be difficult for him to replicate that kind of goal scoring form now that he is set for a stint on the sidelines, particularly as he failed to find the back of the net in his 10 league appearances so far this term.

Szmodics moved quickly after the West Brom game to get surgery, which is a positive sign for his recovery, as it means he shouldn’t miss as many games compared to if he was made to wait.
The Ireland international is an important part of McKenna’s plans, so this will be a blow to the team even if he hasn’t been finding the back of the net so far this season.
Ipswich will be hoping that surgery can put an end to his current injury issues by providing a more permanent solution.
But the proof of that will only come when he does return, which is likely to be months from now.
